A fleshy stemmed annual plant with a high salt content, the Salicornia, also known
as glasswort or samphire, just might be the next culinary herb sensation.
Eaten raw, quickly fried, steamed or microwaved, this high-protein plant is a
surprising addition to salads, soups, hot dishes and a perfect accompaniment for
fish & seafood plates.
Natively, the Salicornia is highly adapted to the sea shore and covered by salt water
for much of the day with the ebb & flow of the tides.
We at Hishtil have developed it as a conventional plant rooted in soil and
irrigated with salted* water. Now, it is suitable for growing outdoors in pots or in
greenhouses, up to 30 cm.
*In order to achieve ultimate salty taste, it is importent to add one full tablespoon of sea salt to each liter of irrigation water.
Note: salty water should be supplied only when using soilless media for growing and the Salicornia is grown as a sole plant or with other Halophytes in the container.
