This is an aromatic, evergreen perennial bush with purple leaves and small mauve-blue flowers. It grows up to 40cm (16") high and spreads to 40cm (16") wide. The plant is native to the Balkan Peninsula.

'Purpurascens' is recommended in combination with 'Icterina' and 'Tricolor' Salvia varieties. The plant is also used for medicinal purposes.
